Art is a well-resourced and popular subject in our school. The subject covers a wide range of disciplines which include:
- Painting & Drawing
- Print Making
- Textiles – sewing machine & hand stitch
- Photography – darkroom & digital
Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3 we cover a variety of units to build and develop skills through fun and engaging activities. The following units embody the disciplines outlined above:
- Colour & Pattern
- Pop Art
- Optical Illusions
- The World Around Me
- Personal Projects
Key Stage 4 & 5
At Key Stage 4 & 5 every Art student will achieve a qualification. We offer two options:
- AQA GCSE Art & Design
- AQA Unit Award Scheme in Visual Arts
The first project we typically do at Key Stage 4 is ‘The Seven Elements of Art’ which covers the basics of what makes a piece of art work and this is studied via art history, art theory and artists past and present. It is a truly exploratory and experimental project which pushes boundaries, helping our young artists to become creative risk-takers and engage in art in a new way.
After their initial year most students will embark on an individual project and will progress according to the National Curriculum or the exam board’s assessment objectives. Work can be tailored to individual skills and or interests. The final year is based on a theme pupils select from the exam paper or as prescribed by the titles on offer in the corresponding year’s Unit Award Scheme.
Finally, for students going on to study in any art field, they will be guided to produce a portfolio.
