Addressing the triad of impairment to
reduce the effect ASD has on pupil learning

Secondary (Key Stage 4 / Key Stage 5)

Hillingdon Manor Senior School is an independent day school which offers excellent education, opportunities for national accreditation and effective support to pupils with either Asperger’s syndrome or high functioning autism. All students work as closely with the mainstream as possible through taking account and adapting the National Curriculum. Students are given curriculum access to enable them to achieve a level of accreditation appropriate to their individual needs. The form of accreditation available to the students at Hillingdon Manor Senior School includes, ASDAN, GCSEs, including English, Mathematics, Science, Art and Citizenship, as well as participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

The students in the Senior School are given many opportunities to practice what they learn in the school setting and in the world outside school. This is achieved through involvement with the immediate community around school, work experience locally, use of local sports facilities and involvement with mainstream peers in a local college. If students reach a specific level of ability in dealing with mainstream situations, they have the opportunity to re-integrate and study at a local college.

The specialist curriculum at Hillingdon Manor Senior School addresses the triad of impairment in autism effectively alongside the student’s individual academic achievement. As in the Lower and Middle and Upper Schools, our approach is based upon proven psychological theories and neurological research, which is complimented in practice by encompassing a therapeutic communication-focused environment. Students are supported by a range of positive intervention and reward systems and the school focuses strongly on teamwork and making choices within a no-blame culture. Our approach has proven to be very effective since our opening and facilitates the well-being of both our students and staff by ensuring development of healthy mind, body and school community.

Our daughter is responding very well to the Home-School behaviour plan, and she is clearly very happy at school. This is the first time in all of her school life that she has ever asked to go to school on a Saturday. She clearly feels very much part of the school environment and now talks about friends she has made. She is extremely proud of the fact that she has been awarded four Certificates of achievement and the Kindness Award.
